So, John contacted me promptly to discuss my job (the following day). He was courteous, friendly and professional, asking the necessary questions to understand our job better. After our conversation, John arranged to come round same day to see the job and give us a quote. If we take him on for the job I'm sure he would be as prompt and professional in getting the job done.

Cost of a metal staircase

The cost of a metal staircase can vary significantly based on factors such as the design, materials, and complexity of the installation. Here’s a breakdown of typical costs:

Average Cost Estimates

  • Basic Metal Staircases: Simple designs with basic materials typically range from £1,000 to £3,000.
  • Custom Metal Staircases: More complex designs and higher-quality materials can cost between £3,000 and £10,000 or more.

Factors Affecting Cost

  • Design Complexity: Custom designs with intricate details or special features will increase the cost.
  • Material Choice: Different metals (e.g., steel, aluminium, wrought iron) have varying costs.
  • Installation Complexity: The complexity of the installation, such as the need for custom fitting or integration with existing structures, can also impact the cost.

How long does it take to install a metal staircase?

The time required to install a metal staircase can vary based on several factors, including the complexity of the design, the size of the project, and the specifics of the installation site. Here’s a more detailed look at the installation timeline:

Simple Designs

For straightforward, prefabricated metal staircases with minimal customization:

  • Preparation: Typically takes 1 to 2 days. This includes measuring the site, preparing the foundation, and ensuring all materials are ready.
  • Installation: Usually completed within 1 to 2 days. The staircase components are assembled and securely installed, including any necessary welding or bolting.

Complex Designs

Custom or intricate metal staircases with unique features or designs may require more time:

  • Design and Fabrication: Custom designs often involve a detailed planning and fabrication process that can take several weeks. This includes creating detailed blueprints, cutting and shaping metal components, and adding any custom features.
  • Site Preparation: May take 2 to 3 days, depending on the complexity of the site and the foundation work required.
  • Installation: Can range from 3 to 7 days or more. This phase includes assembling the custom components on-site, ensuring all parts fit perfectly, and securely fastening the structure. Additional steps such as welding, applying finishes, and installing handrails or balustrades are also included.

Are steel stairs cheaper than wood?

Generally, steel staircases can be more cost-effective than wood, especially for simple designs. However, costs can vary based on the complexity and materials chosen for both types.

Are metal stairs noisy?

Properly installed metal staircases should not be excessively noisy. The noise level can be minimised by using appropriate materials and installation techniques, such as anti-vibration pads and rubber treads.

Are stairs without bannisters illegal?

Building regulations typically require staircases to have bannisters for safety. It’s important to check local building codes and regulations to ensure compliance with safety standards.

I had some fencing replaced, some crazy paving taken up and gravel put down and a gate erected by these guys. The work was done to a great standard with minimum fuss and in a timely fashion. They do not use any sub-contractors so you know who you are dealing with throughout the project. The site was left clean and tidy too so I am more than happy to recommend SNC Building and Maintenance Service for similar jobs.
