So, John contacted me promptly to discuss my job (the following day). He was courteous, friendly and professional, asking the necessary questions to understand our job better. After our conversation, John arranged to come round same day to see the job and give us a quote. If we take him on for the job I'm sure he would be as prompt and professional in getting the job done.

Katie

What can a blacksmith/metalworker help with?

Blacksmiths and metalworkers possess a unique set of skills that allow them to manipulate various metals for both functional and artistic purposes. Here’s what they can do:

  • Heating and Shaping Metal: Using techniques like forging, they heat metals such as wrought iron, steel, and copper to the right temperature to shape them into desired forms.
  • Metal Joining: Employing methods such as welding and riveting to join metal pieces securely.
  • Finishing Work: Applying finishes to metals to enhance durability and aesthetic appeal, including painting, powder coating, and patinating.
  • Custom Fabrication: Creating everything from ornamental gates and railings to bespoke furniture and sculpture.

What should I consider when hiring a blacksmith?

  1. Are a skilled company with a strong history of high standard projects
  2. Have all the necessary licences and insurance needed to protect you and their workers
  3. Have a good range of positive reviews from previous customers vouching for their reliability
  4. Are offering the blacksmith services you need, and are available to carry out the work in the timeframe you need it to be completed by
  5. Are quoting a price and payment option that you are happy with, having compared the quote with other metalworking companies

How much do metalworkers cost to hire?

The cost of hiring metalworkers can vary widely depending on the specifics of the project, including the type of metalwork required, the materials used, the complexity of the designs, and the geographical location. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the factors that influence pricing:

Project-Based Pricing

Most metalworking projects are quoted on a per-project basis, which typically includes:

  • Material Costs: The type of metal used significantly affects the price. Common metals like steel and aluminium are usually less expensive than more exotic materials like bronze, brass, or copper.
  • Design Complexity: More intricate designs that require detailed craftsmanship or special techniques can increase the cost.
  • Scale and Scope: Larger installations or projects that require structural integrity, such as metal beams for buildings, can be more costly due to the additional material and labour required.

Labour Costs

  • Fabrication and Assembly: The labour involved in cutting, shaping, welding, and assembling metal can be extensive, especially for custom or intricate designs.
  • Finishing: Additional costs may incur for finishing services such as powder coating, galvanising, or painting, which are essential for both aesthetics and corrosion resistance.

Typical Pricing

  • Hourly Rates: If negotiated, hourly rates for metalworkers can range from £20 to £50 per hour, depending on their skill level and the complexity of the work.
  • Daily Rates: For longer projects, daily rates may range from £150 to £400.
  • Flat Rates for Specific Items: For common items like gates, railings, or small sculptures, metalworkers might offer flat rates. For example, a simple wrought iron gate might start at £200, whereas more elaborate gates can cost upwards of £1,000.

Initially I was only going to have Decking done in my garden. After Andrew came and saw my garden he gave me a different idea and provided with me a scatch of paving and deck to transform my garden into some thing different. After he has done this it looks so nice. He transformed my garden completely. He is a very hard working gentleman. Very reasonable with price and very sincere perfect and honest. While he was working I decided to have fencing done as well. Andrew has become like a family member to us. I will recommend Andrew very srongly to everybody without any hesitation
